Impaired Driving, DUI and Over 80
Impaired driving charges will forever change your life. Having “one too many” and then getting behind the wheel of a car can have devastating consequences. You could be arrested, lose your driver’s licence, lose your job, possibly face imprisonment and risk being classed a “high risk driver”.The minimum penalty in Ontario for a first offence is:
- Suspension of your driving privileges for one year
- A fine of no less than $1000
- Participation in the “Back on Track Course”
- Installation of an Ignition Interlock system (an alcohol screening device) in your vehicle for one year, at your expense.
The minimum penalty in Ontario for a second offence is:
- Suspension of driving privileges for three years
- Mandatory jail term of 30 days
- Fine at the judge’s discretion
- Participation in the “Back on Track Course”
- Installation, at your cost, of an Ignition Interlock system (an alcohol screening device) in your car for three years
The Ministry of Transportation’s “Back on Track” counseling program will cost you $578. You will be required to attend classes and undergo assessments throughout the program.
