Careless Driving
Careless driving is one of the most serious traffic charges, and a charge that is most often given to someone who has been involved in a collision. It is a very broad charge that covers a wide array of situations. A brief description of the charge is “driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention, or without a reasonable consideration for other people using the highway”.
Retaining legal representation for a careless driving charge is imperative as the penalties are severe, the description is so broad and relies on an officer’s judgment, it is most often left to the courts to decide whether the driver is guilty or not.
The penalties for a careless driving conviction are as follows:
- 6 Demerit Points.
- Fine of no less than $400 and no more than $2000
- A possible suspension of your driver’s licence for a period of no more than 2 years
- A possible term of imprisonment for up to 6 months.
Obviously careless driving can result in an increase to your insurance premiums, but you may be identified as “high risk driver” which will drastically affect the rates you are offered in the future.
